Periodontal disease is more commonly known as gum disease. It is a bacterial infection that affects the soft tissue (gums) and can lead to dental decay, bone loss, and ultimately tooth loss. Gum disease has been proven to impact the entire body being linked to cardiovascular disease as well as making diabetes maintenance more difficult.

Checking for gum disease

Hygienists will check for gum health during a dental check-up by measuring the pockets between the teeth and the gums. Gum health is a priority in maintaining good overall oral health and can be prevented. Your hygienist will work with your to either avoid developing gum disease or on how to manage it.

Make sure you know your gum health by asking your dental hygienist or dentist at your next appointment.
