Dental sealants are used to prevent cavities. They are an opaque or transparent coating placed on the top of the teeth. The sealant will fill in the small crevices found in the top of the tooth so that food particles cannot become stuck, which can lead to dental decay. These crevices can be deep and toothbrushing may not be enough to dislodge the trapped particles. In most cases dental sealants are placed on the molars.
