A dental extraction is exactly what it sounds like, the dentist will remove a tooth or teeth. The reasons a patient will have an extraction are because the tooth or teeth may be severely infected, dead, damaged, or pushing on other teeth, which may lead to further complications.

What to Expect from a Dental Extraction

The procedure involves receiving a local anaesthetic (freezing the area around the tooth), the dentist may make small incisions around the tooth to create space and then removes the tooth. Once all of the tooth is removed the area is sutured, and pressure is applied to stop any bleeding. In some cases, the patient may need a bone graft if there is significant bone loss.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

The most common form of dental extraction is that of the wisdom teeth. The Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that come in during the late teen years.

Wisdom teeth are commonly removed for several reasons including:

• Impacted wisdom teeth are when there is not enough space for the teeth to develop normally. This can cause pain when growing in and infection.
• Wisdom teeth can be hard to clean and can develop decay and infection.
• When wisdom teeth grow in they can push the other teeth. This may be the case for those who have had orthodontic treatment and want to avoid teeth shifting.

Many patients decide to have wisdom teeth removed as a precaution.
